Billions lose access to social media as Facebook and Instagram go down in apparent outage

Billions of people were left without access to social media overnight after Facebook and Instagram went down. Shortly before 1.30am BST, the world's two largest social media platforms were left unusable. The pair boast north of three billion monthly active users each. Outage monitoring site DownDetector showed huge spikes as people around the world rushed to try and check what was going on.
