Cosmic Star Formation Slows Despite Stable Hydrogen Reservoirs

A new study using data from FAST and DESI reveals that the rate of star formation in the universe has dropped significantly over the past 4.5 billion years, even though the density of neutral atomic hydrogen has remained relatively constant, challenging previous assumptions about the causes of this decline.
