UC San Diego Engineers Achieve Helicity-Independent Optical Switching in Thick Magnetic Materials

Researchers at UC San Diego have demonstrated a new method for rewriting magnetic information using specially engineered light. By shaping the light beam to concentrate energy into extremely small regions, they achieved helicity-independent magnetization reversal in a material nine layers thick, overcoming previous limitations and paving the way for faster, denser, and more energy-efficient magnetic memory.
