Everyone could contribute dramatically more to scientific knowledge if given better recognition, administrative support and funding stability; research has found. An international collaboration of 16 organisations used surveys and group discussions to identify key challenges, opportunities and best practices in citizen science projects. The research warns that the sector is running on the goodwill of unpaid volunteers and under-resourced coordinators, and that this is not sustainable.
