Hubble Space Telescope captured ionizing ultraviolet light from galaxy MXDFz4.4, which existed just 1.4 billion years after the Big Bang — the closest astronomers have ever come to directly measuring how compact, star-forming galaxies ended the cosmic dark ages and made the universe transparent.
