A new study by Stefan Rahmstorf and colleagues, published this week in Geophysical Research Letters, concludes that the Atlantic 'cold blob' south of Greenland is being caused by a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation rather than by surface heat loss. The current that delivers heat to Europe is slowing down, and it is doing it deep enough in the water column to mean what the climate models said it would.
